Dinner Time!

We had a very nice dinner on Saturday at Hamid's apartment. He was a visiting student at JHU last summer and now we are visiting student's at DTU! He and his wife made Persian dinner for us! It was very good, we ate and talked for a while. Here is a nice picture of all of us together!

It's a Force Field!

Greetings my friend! I have been very busy lately! So I haven't had time to sit down and write, but finally, even though I don't have time still, I'll just write this and sleep an extra hour tomorrow :D This comment I wrote the other night, I went to sleep before I finished what I was writing, of course, hahaha

The nice city of Copenhaguen

Now there are a lot of stories to tell, and most of them are mixed in my head, so try not to get confused :P and don't worry about the exact days hahaha

The welcoming of the ICOWES Meeting!

So let's start with my adventures in Denmark with Claire! Claire is a PhD student at Hopkins who works in Meneveau's group as well. She is also visiting Copenhaguen as part of the international collaboration from our wind energy grant. Claire came two weeks ago so last weekend we went and touristed around Copenhaguen. We first met Saturday morning. We went around the area I knew and then we went to the City Hall where we wanted to get on one of the free Copenhaguen tours. It was quite funny when we had walked for 10 minutes and got to the lakes. Claire was taking some pictures when this drunk was talking to some people next to us. Suddenly he goes up the ledge, all drunk, and the people were worried and yelling for him to get down. He definitely had some business to take care of, and of course, our location had quite an interesting view. And since Claire was taking pictures, this magical moment was captured.

Watering the water
We were taking a tour at 1:00pm, but when we got there it seems they are not giving the tours at 1, only the ones at 11:00am, so that was a bummer. Being tourists, and having planned a day of trouristing we decided to walk around and just find our way through the city. This doesn't sound appealing, but remember Copenhaguen is a veeery safe city and makes for a good walk! At some point we were walking away from the city and werent sure where we were headed. So during our discussion, on a bridge, a biker stopped by and helped us out! He asked us where we wanted to go, and of course we didn't know hahaha. So he pointed us in the direction of Christiania! And there we went! This is quite a place, it even has a green district where no pictures are allowed, go figure haha.

The land of the free hahaha
At some point during one of our touristing days we walked by this car! Guess who still hasn't paid their tickets? hahaha

They are not willing to pay the ticket...
Our tour guide providing some history facts with the use of tourists, as part of the explanation! This was way more entertaining than my history classes back in high school, hahaha.
There was an important conference this week here at DTU. The ICOWES Meeting were we had people from all over the world visiting. I met with some old friends and made some new friends as well! It was a very good conference with many talks on wind energy aerodynamics and all the fun stuff! Here is a picture of the audience being challenged by Claire's hard questions on the effects of forcing in wind turbines!

Here is a picture of a floating hotel in in Copenhauen! It seems fun, but very expensive! I think I could stay like 1-2 weeks before running out of funding for the summer, hahaha.

A very nice hotel in the water!
I walk by this statue every day, I wonder where the drunk guy found his inspiration....

Watering the wall
I have been working a lot lately and a funny thing is in my code I have a variable called "ForceField". This reminds me of the song "Feel So Close", so I've been listening to the song while coding, it's kinda funny. haha

Why is the Rum always gone?

And you're wondering why is the Rum always gone, well Jack Sparrow always has the same question! It was Friday, and I went to a BBQ for someone's birthday! I went with my friend Iva, who was friends with most of the people there, who work at Riso. It was a nice BBQ and I was talking with Iva when suddenly Jack Sparrow (a random Icelandic fellow) came out of nowhere and started talking to Iva. He asked if she was Icelandic, and then told us that he was crashing the party and didnt know anyone there. hahaha We talked with him for a while and he left after being aronud for an hour and asking everyone at the party for a cigarette. So after we talked with him for a while Iva says: he reminds of me of Jack Sparow, and that right there, was it. He was Jack Sparrow! So why is the Rum always gone? No one really knows, but here is a picture of our friend Jack!

I spent most of Saturday in my place with my friends Mario, Kerstin, Roger and Ivo, who is visiting Europe for vacation and has been friends with Mario and Roger since they were little. I guess the highlight for Saturday night I missed, but still it was fun so I'll tell you about it. They all went out late Saturday night. They stopped at 7/11 to get some drinks and a guy stole one of their bikes. So a random girl told them which way the guy went, it was a drunk guy, haha. So Mario went after him, and eventually found his bike. So he ran straight into the guy with his bike and knocked him over. Then pushed him against the ground, yelled at him and finally went back with his bike. I wish I were there to see it but I guess I heard the story a couple times!

The living room
So now I have my days mixed up in my head so I will try to get the stories right but Saturday/Sunday might be overlapped!

Sunday was Mario's birthday! So we went on a picnic to the park which is next to where I get the bus! We had a BBQ with some friends. The best part was when we had to go get some ice. And I went on a ride on a bike! This was my first bike ride in Denmark. It was kinda funny, last time I took one of these in NY it was more than $30 haha. I got a pretty good deal this time, Mario biked on the way there and then I biked on the was back.

On the way back!
On the way there!

On Saturday some sort of manifestation went by our place. I'm not sure what it was but I took a picture, haha. And here are some more pictures from the BBQ.

No more fossil fuels! (jk, i dont really know why they're protesting)

Work!

Hello friends! I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while but I've been busy working and time seems to pass way too fast! Days go by faster than ever!

Sunday was my day off where I decided to go touristing around Copenhaguen with my friend Jared, another visiting student from JHU. We went to see the little mermaid and walked around the main tourist area in Copenhaguen, where we saw a bit of everything ranging from the local "Starbucks" called "Baresso" all the way to McDonalds and the Disney store, yes America is here as well, haha. I met Jared at church after the service he attended and then we went out. We walked for a while and decided to eat at this place that was a bit expensive but we hadnt seen another place for a while and we were pretty hungry. A $20 Omelette was the result, probably not the best decision, specially after we started walking again and went straight into the touristy area packed with local restaurants... Anyways here is a picture of us and our Omeletts, they were good but common, not even a toast with it? haha

I finally met my supervisor during the summer, Jens Sorensen. He's a nice guy, pretty much one of the most respected researchers around here! I met with him and Robert Mikkelsen on Monday to discuss what I will be working during the summer. We talked for a bit on what I will be doing and the things we will be comparing. As a start they suggested writing a blade element momentum script to calculate the quantities along a turbine blade such as forces, induction factor, lift and drag coefficients, etc. Here is a plot of how these quantities are looking like!

During our trip we ran into this car. We were taking pictures when a local old man says to us: "That's what happens in Denmark when you don't pay your parking tickets". Funny right? haha

"This is what happens in Denmark if you don't pay your tickets".
So other than that I've been working in my computer, talking to my girlfriend, friends and family online. I stayed home today because it's a Danish holiday, constitution day or something. Some people were going to school and others were staying so after the alarm went off this morning I decided I was staying home, hahaha. I did laundry yesterday, but there's no dryer, so this is the "green" way of drying your clothes. It's pretty dry here so this works!
